How does an car engine produce 300 horsepower in a matter of seconds from so many moving metal parts? How is an army of ants able to build great massive labyrinths to protect their queen and themselves from predators? How is a coach able to get he the most of his players to produce a championship team? They all require some form of process that aligns all the moving parts into a well synced and functioning engine. How well that process is designed, tuned and maintained determines how efficient it is. Continue reading

iPad: Hit or Miss?
Yesterday Steve Jobs presented the most anticipated cross computing tool since the iPhone. After listening closely to the Twitter and blogshpere it’s apparent Jobs and company didn’t hit this one of the park – but created another major miss probably waiting to go to the wall of shame. Time To Ditched Jacob’s Top 10
One of the easiest usability tests to employ has been the heuristic evaluation, made popular by usability advocate Jacob Nielsen. His top-ten evaluation criterion has the basis for all testing of this sort since the late 90s. Continue reading
Apple Come On Already And End The Rumours
Once again marketing and tech genius of Steve Jobs has the world sitting on the edge for probably the next biggest thing since… the iPhone. The worst kept secret may finally get announced – officially – tomorrow that Apple will release its first touch screen tablet. The Apple tablet expected to be based on the successful introduction of the touch screen phone may revolutionize the way we interact with computers. Jobs has been quotes saying the tablet …”Will be the most important thing I’ve ever done.” I would agree with him … if done right.

Tablets have been around before. So what’s the big deal now? Tablets of old were heavy, many required a based with a keyboard to be fully functional and required a stylus to interact with which can be slow and cumbersome for some to utilize. The beauty of touch screen is our hand becomes the stylus. I would love to see how well I can finally finger paint in PhotoShop!

LinkedIn Shouldn’t Try To Be Facebook
A recent article on iMediaConnection.com reports that LinkedIn – the popular social media site for business professionals – is suffering an identity crisis. The article compares web traffic statistics between LinkedIn and Facebook. It goes on to suggest that if LinkedIn wishes to get the same traffic as Facebook It will have a hard time catching up.
I’d argue LinkedIn shouldn’t try to compete with Facebook. What would the value be if LinkedIn became another Facebook?
No doubt Facebook is the most popular social media platform to date. But should it be the standard in which we compare all social media sites? To me that’s like saying that the Toyota Camry is the benchmark for all automakers purely based on sales. Imagine if BMW or Mercedes believed that was true. You wouldn’t spend the $50,000 price tag to get a German made Camry. Would you?
For LinkedIn to stay relevant it needs to further distinguish itself from sites like Facebook and stay true to it purpose. Serve the business community.
Firefox Accessibility Extension: Must Have For Developers
I’ve have recently installed the Firefox Accessibility Extension (version 1.5) by Jon Gunderson of the Illinois Center for Information Accessibility. It’s a fantastic tool that allows you to test the against the FAE and beta W3C accessibility rules. It’s a simple to use toolbar that enables reporting on navigation, text-based and embedded content, scripting and more. Should be a must have if you’re developing web sites but also if you manage your own web site and need to make it more accessible. Check it out on Mozilla.org.
