Search Still Number 1

Posted on | May 26, 2009 | No Comments

A recent Nielsen report confirms search is still the number one online activity among leading digital countries.  The most interesting finding in the same report is that email has fallen behind to member based communities, social networks and blogging sites.

Top Five Online Sectors December 2008*

  • Search
  • General interest-portals & communities
  • Software manufacturers
  • Member communities (social networks and blogs)
  • Email

Lead by sites like Facebook and MySpace, social networks and blogging sites are growing over three times the rate of overall Internet growth, according to eMarkterer.com.

But what does this all mean to marketers? Don’t change your formula just yet if  your online marketing mix contains email, affiliates and paid search. Though social networks are becoming more ingrained in our Internet vernacular the ROI on advertising on community based sites is very poor. Building a Facebook page may cost your very little. However you will still get more bang for the buck with more tried and true methods.
